Application & Purpose

8,905 photographs of fruit fly brains, arranged by brightness, make one photograph of a fruit fly brain. Each small picture is a separate experiment showing a few of the brain's cells; none shows the organ itself. The figure makes that visible — a complete brain that no single experiment contains and only the collection can show.

Vibe-coded with Claude (Anthropic) — six hours, 639 lines of Python that select tiles, match tone and lay out the page. No image-generating model; every pixel is measured data from Janelia's FlyLight archive, CC BY 4.0.

Process & Iterations

The image is a photomosaic — small pictures standing in for the tones of a large one — an old technique, but using photographs of fly brains to draw a fly brain is new. The first versions were too flat to read: the brain was there, but only as a vague brightening, no part distinct. The fix was the target picture: instead of averaging the collection, one real photograph of a single brain was used, and the texture came back — the two visual lobes, the central brain, the grooves between them. The last change was colour. In grey it stayed clinical; rendered in the green of the original fluorescence, it finally looked like what it is.

A Researcher's Perspective

I study how a fly's brain turns sensation into behaviour, working with flies in which a few cells are made to glow. What surprised me was that the machine could not draw such a brain at all — asked to, it produced something clean, symmetrical and wrong — yet it could arrange 8,905 real ones perfectly. That is both the limit and the use. To colleagues: it is a good sorter, not a good witness.
